Welcome to iualdii.net, the web presence of Dr John Kemp. This is my personal site, and so the content will be relatively varied in subject matter and quality. Keep an eye on the blog posts (below left) and content updates (below right) to see what's going on. The site also has a Twitter feed if you wish to be informed of updated content and scheduled maintainance.

The majority of my day-to-day content will be posted on either my personal blog or my technical blog.

Registering an account on this site will exclude your comments from spam checking but currently offers no other benefits.

Anonymous Commenting Enabled

I have re-enabled anonymous comments, subject to processing by Mollom's spam detection service. This will not affect authenticated users, who are excluded from the processing. I will be closely monitoring how effective this solution is, and hopefully the results will be good. For those wishing to comment without creating an account, the process should be unaltered unless the service detects that you are posting spam (in which case the comment is dropped) or it is unsure (in which case you will be given a CAPTCHA challenge before the comment is accepted).

Site Recovery

As you may have noticed, the site went down last night and it went down hard. A software update managed to error out and leave things in a very inconsistent state. Due to this I've had to rebuild my site from the ground up, but luckily I had a series of backups both in the form of database/file dumps and a test server that had a copy of the important content. This meant that with a little bit of effort I could recover everything I needed. It would have been much easier had I performed a backup immediately before the update, and in future I will be doing that (as you are very strongly advised to do). I've learned my lesson from this, and hopefully you can learn from it too.

You may notice a few differences this time around - the front page has been rearranged, there are no translation options, and the galleries are gone. The latter two will be back eventually, but that may take a while. Translation is likely to wait until Drupal 7 is released and hopefully they provide the capability in a more sensible way. The galleries still don't have a nice solution and I think I'm back to rolling my own.
